Someone once said to me "Anybody who likes the Sundial Bridge has never been on it." In a sense, I concur. It isn't exactly something that fits with everything else around, and the money that built it could have gone elsewhere, like to entertainment venues (which are quite needed) or to a place like the River Trail, which needs better security and can still serve the purpose of an outdoors attraction that makes people want to exercise.
And if you hadn't noticed or were unaware of it,this construction design lattice is a wonderful example of a TETRAHEDRAL TRUSS (invented by Buckminster Fuller).Strong, light, flexible, with a minimum amount of materials to accomplish the span, the perfect contrivance for bridge building...
For a tower they SPIRAL the matrix of stacked tetrahedrons. It gives tremendous strength even though it has some flexibility as well. This is biomimicry pure and simple. It is the same basic pattern as the spiraling matrix which gives longitudinal strength AND flexibility to leg bones...
The Sundial Bridge isn't over a lake, its over the Sacramento River.
gorgeous pan btw
